SLIDELL, La.-

A Colorado man is accused of raping his girlfriend’s 14-year-old daughter at a motel where they were living while he did Hurricane Katrina cleanup work.

Kenneth Vaughn, 40, of Englewood, Colo., was held in lieu of $100,000 bond after being booked Monday on a charge of forcible rape, Slidell police Capt. Kevin Foltz said Tuesday.

He said the rape occurred several months ago while the girl’s mother—a housekeeper at the motel—was in jail on bad-check charges and the girl’s 11-year-old brother slept in the next bed.

When the mother got out of jail, her daughter told her about the rape, and was sent to live with relatives in Colorado, Foltz said.

The girl later told an aunt, who notified police in the Denver suburb of Sheridan; the Arapahoe County Department of Human Services got in touch with Slidell police.

After a two-month investigation, Vaughn went to Slidell police headquarters for questioning and was arrested.

He and the girl’s mother were still living together in the motel, Foltz said.

He said he did not know whether detectives are investigating the girl’s mother for not reporting the alleged rape to police.

Police said Vaughn did odd jobs such as cutting trees and clearing debris.
