No Torre or Cox
Chalk up the Rockies’ opening-day loss to Clint Hurdle. Once again, Hurdle snatched defeat from the jaws of victory … as he did at least 10 times in 2006. Leading 6-5 in the eighth with Manny Corpas having gone 1-2-3 in the seventh, Hurdle replaced Corpas with LaTroy Hawkins. Why not use logic and stick with the hot hand in the eighth? A major-league pitcher who can’t pitch to more than three batters, shouldn’t be there. Why can’t Hurdle learn from his past failure? The Monforts’ decision to offer two-year contract extensions to Hurdle and GM Dan O’Dowd was not a wise decision. A trained monkey could have done the same, and since the Monforts are so frugal, the monkey would cost only peanuts. Please, Clint, can’t you simply use common sense? You know you’re not La Russa, Cox or Torre!

Dealin’ a dud
Woody’s nickname “Dealin’ Dan” for Rockies GM Dan O’Dowd brings local car sales tycoon Dealin’ Doug Moreland to mind. Perhaps the Rockies should hire Doug to make personnel deals. And then we can rename Dan – Dan O’Dud – but I think Woody already thought of that one, too!
