BROOMFIELD, Colo.-
A state high school wrestling champion has been arrested on charges of shooting an off-duty police officer in the head with a pellet gun while both were driving. The officer was not injured.
Cory Casady, 18, was jailed Monday on suspicion of menacing with a weapon and reckless endangerment in suburban Broomfield, northwest of Denver. Jail officials said Casady was in the process of being released on bail Tuesday.
Casady is a junior at Broomfield High School. He won the state Class 4A 140-pound wrestling championship on Feb. 17.
The officer’s name was not released. The officer works for another jurisdiction but authorities did not say which one.
Broomfield police Sgt. Colleen O’Connell said Casady passed the officer’s car, slowed, yelled and fired the pellet gun twice, hitting the officer in the temple. The officer followed the vehicle until Broomfield police stopped it, O’Connell said.
Three juvenile passengers in Casady’s car were questioned but were not arrested, O’Connell said.
It was not immediately clear if anyone in Casady’s car knew the driver of the other vehicle was an officer.
Casady had no phone listed under his own name.
