Dubfire puts Deep Dish in the cupboard (for now) for solo DJ gig at Vinyl
Sometimes being at the top just isn’t enough.

As one half of DJ and producing duo Deep Dish, Dubfire won a Grammy Award in 2002 for his work remixing Dido’s “Thank You.” Songs by Madonna, The Rolling Stones and Justin Timberlake have also gotten the Deep Dish treatment. Deep Dish released a critically acclaimed album of originals, 1998’s “Junk Science.” They’re one of the most famous American electronic-music artists in the world.

And last year Sharam, Dubfire’s partner in Deep Dish, recorded a solo live set for the prestigious Global Underground label.

Now it’s Dubfire’s turn to shine. His own Global Underground album, “GU031: Taipei” hit the streets April 10, and now he’s on tour in the real-life global underground. He makes a Denver stop at Vinyl (1082 Broadway) on Saturday.

The album’s digital release on April 3 debuted at no. 1 on the iTunes electronic-music download chart.

The physical album dropped April 10 and Dubfire – a.k.a. Ali Shirazinia – fondly recalls the CD-release party at Scores in New York City.

Scores is a strip club. An upscale strip club, true, but it’s certainly a unique venue for a big-name release party.

“It was something we all brainstormed as an alternative to the typical CD-release party, which is at a lot of familiar venues in New York,” says Shirazinia. “We figured a lot of the PR people we were inviting would be sick of the same four walls.”

It proved a hit.

“We were pleasantly surprised to see everyone we invited RSVP because they wanted to see if we could pull it off,” he says. “It was good – the music I play was conducive to the strip club environment. For me, it was a match made in heaven. Easy on the eyes, too.”

The new Dubfire album and tour will help Shirazinia establish his personality outside of the Dish, though he’s DJed solo for years.

“It’s something that they (Global Underground) were really aware of, as far as timing,” Shirazinia says. “We’ve always done solo gigs. Now it’s more concentrated because we are officially taking a break from Deep Dish. It’s more of a concerted effort now to push the solo identities.”

Fans of Deep Dish’s eclectic brand of house might be surprised by Shirizinia’s sensibilities, he says.

“With Deep Dish it’s a shared vision, a shared personality. (In reality) we’re polar opposites in personality and in our taste in music. My solo stuff is darker, a lot more techno-rooted, a lot more experimental.”

A glance at the track listing for “Taipei” reveals an industrial, almost goth, undertone. Tunes by Depeche Mode and Nitzer Ebb mix with tracks from popular dance artists like Carl Craig and Ellen Allien.

Don’t say Shirazinia didn’t warn you. “What (people) shouldn’t expect is a lot of the material I was playing as part of Deep Dish,” he says. “If you’re a current Deep Dish fan you might be disappointed.”

Open your ears to Dubfire at Vinyl, beginning at 9 p.m. Saturday. Advance tickets are $15 and are available at groovetickets.com.

Food for thought

A delicious new direction for the local arts community continues April 25 with the Black Is … CultureFeast, featuring a performance by one of the original hip-hop divas, Bahamadia, at La Rumba (99 W. Ninth Ave.). Her show doubles as an unofficial post-party for that evening’s Nas concert at the Fillmore, 1510 Clarkson St. (Nas is slated for a special appearance at the event, too.)

Tickets are $15 at the door, or $10 with a Nas ticket stub.

Formerly known at the Denver Pan African Film Festival, the CultureFeast is nearly a week of celebration, with movies, art, music, spoken word and parties all over Denver and Boulder. It begins Monday with “An Evening With Sonia Sanchez” in Boulder at the University of Colorado math building.
