DENVER-

Right-hander Rodrigo Lopez was put on the 15-day disabled list Thursday by the Colorado Rockies, who filled his roster spot by purchasing the contract of right-hander Matt Herges from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Lopez allowed one run in four innings during a 7-2 loss to Los Angeles on Wednesday night before leaving with tightness in his right elbow. He missed his scheduled start Sunday in Arizona because of inflammation in the elbow.

Lopez is 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA in three starts.

“It was the smart thing, and the right thing to do,” Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said.

Herges pitched 5 2-3 innings in four relief appearances at Colorado Springs. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, Colorado designated right-hander Brian Lawrence for assignment. The Rockies have 10 days to trade Lawrence, release him or send him outright to the minors.
