When largemouth bass enthusiasts anticipate a spring temperature breakthrough, their thoughts often turn to giant Lake Powell. Wayne Gustaveson, the biologist who keeps tabs on the Utah portion of the lake, expects that magic happening this weekend, with exceptional fishing for several days.
Gustaveson reports that some largemouth spawning beds have been seen on the northern end of the lake, but the major smallmouth spawning episode has yet to occur.
Bass spawn at the big impoundment on the lower Colorado River places large fish within reach of shore fishermen. Stealthy anglers can sight-fish for bass that have just spawned. Male bass guarding the eggs will attack almost any lure that comes near.
While touting bedding time as an exciting opportunity for success, Gustaveson urges anglers to release male fish caught off nests.
“In the bass world, males determine the survival of the next generation,” Gustaveson said.
The same is true for crappie, which spawn at roughly the same time. Male security guards often are almost black in color. Release those caught on nests to ensure survival of the next generation.
Gustaveson also reports a hot striped bass bite in the channel near the dam. His regular report on the lake may be accessed at www.wayneswords.com.
