Golden – Former Jefferson County treasurer Mark Paschall had his arraignment continued for the third time this morning, until May 14.

Paschall, 52, of Arvada, was indicted in January on two felony charges of attempted felony theft and compensation for past official behavior.

He is accused of offering a top appointee, Kathy Redmond, a $25,000 bonus at the end of 2006 just before he left office and demanding she pay him $9,000 out of the bonus’ proceeds.

Redmond rejected the offer and told county officials.

Jefferson County District Court Judge Randall Arp continued the arraignment this morning to give Paschall and his attorney more time to review grand jury transcripts.

During the hearing, Arp pushed attorneys to “get the case basically moving forward.” Prosecutor Tom Jackson noted if Paschall had entered a plea, he might jeopardize his right to a hearing to determine if there is probable cause for the charges.

With Paschall’s attorney David Lane “unexpectedly out of town,” according to Lane associate Elizabeth Hunt-White, the plea was delayed.

Hunt-White said the prosecution did not notify Lane’s office until two weeks ago that the transcripts were available.

Arp gave the defense until Friday to file a probable-cause motion. If the motion is not filed by then, Arp said he would consider the right waived.

All parties declined comment since there is a gag order in the case. Paschall remains free on $1,000 bond.
