To nobody’s great surprise, seven-year veteran “The Gilmore Girls” won’t be back on CW next year. The series ends its run on May 15. Negotiations ended with no agreement between the network and Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, who played mother and daughter Lorelai and Rory on the series that initially launched on (and helped define) The WB.

The series, created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, gave television fresh insights into modern rebellion and female bonding. With the departure of the original writer-creator, however, it declined qualitatively and seemed to have run its dramatic course.

The volatile single mom and teenage daughter dynamic tested viewers’ patience over the years (fans seemed unhappy when the relationship was strained). The family fireworks were amplified by the presence of Kelly Bishop, who played brittle matriarch Emily Gilmore. For a time, their three generations of snipping women perfectly captured certain warring social strata within a family.
