The Stanford women’s lacrosse team scored four consecutive goals to begin the second half and held off a late rally to upset top-seeded Denver 12-11 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship game Sunday in Davis, Calif.

Stanford (9-8), the third seed, received four goals and an assist from Daphne Patterson and a hat trick from Liz Piselli.

Denver (16-3), ranked No. 15 nationally, scored three goals in the final 2:21, but Stanford managed to hold on. The Pioneers were led by senior midfielder Kristie Leggio’s six goals and three assists. Sophomore midfielder Karen Morton added three goals for DU.

The Pioneers, who have never qualified for the NCAA Tournament, will find out today whether they earned one of eight at-large bids to the Division I event’s 16-team field.

Track and field

Adams State sophomore Wayne Durham and Western State senior Lisa Holeman led their multi-event fields after the first day of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference outdoor championships at Rex Stadium in Alamosa.

Durham scored 3,794 points for a 46-point lead Sunday over teammate Dusty Fairchild in the decathlon.

Holeman’s 3,100 points led Adams State’s Amanda Gylling (3,009) in the heptathlon.

The meet continues through Tuesday.

Women’s basketball

Wyoming generated a profit last season for the first time in the 34-year history of its women’s basketball program.

The Cowgirls made at least $160,000, according to Bill Sparks, the school’s associate athletic director.

Sparks expects the figure to increase after the WNIT distributes money to all 48 teams that took part. The money will be disbursed based on attendance.

Wyoming accounted for 44 percent of the attendance for all WNIT games played.
