Readers e-mailed us with concerns about feeding their dogs onions and garlic after our May 2 story on homemade pet food. The story mentioned onions, and one of the recipes called for garlic. Dr. Todd Rezac of the Deer Creek Animal Hospital advises against feeding dogs anything in the onion family, because onions and garlic can cause a dangerous form of anemia.

Consult with your veterinarian before switching your pet to an entirely homemade diet.

The American Veterinary Medical Association says to keep the following foods out of your pet’s diet:

Alcohol; avocado; chewing gum, candy and breath fresheners containing xylitol;chocolate; coffee grounds; fatty foods; garbage (rotting food contains molds or bacteria that could produce food poisoning); garlic; grapes/raisins; macadamia nuts; onions; salt; tea; yeast dough
