A man police said was armed with a knife was shot Tuesday by a Denver officer in a room at the Civic Center Apartments.
The man, who was not identified by police, was carried from the building on a gurney and taken to Denver Health Medical Center.
The extent of his injury was unclear, said John White, a Denver Police Department spokesman.
Police were called to the Renaissance at Civic Center apartments near Broadway and 16th Ave. about 4:45 p.m. to assist paramedics and firefighters on a “welfare check,” White said.
When officers arrived, they found a man on the third floor armed with a knife, White said.
Officers tried to persuade the man to put the knife down but were unsuccessful. An unnamed officer fired one shot at the man, White said.
The incident clogged rush-hour traffic on Lincoln Street, and RTD buses using the Civic Center station had to circle two blocks to pick up passengers because 16th Avenue was shut down.
The shooting is under investigation and more details could be released today or later this week, White said.

This article has been corrected in this online archive. Originally, due to a reporting error, it incorrectly identified the downtown Denver YMCA as the location of the shooting. It was the Renaissance at Civic Center Apartments.
