Change is the operative word when discussing the Rockies’ pitchers – and even their agents.
Byung-Hyun Kim, who has been hoping for a trade since failing to make the rotation in spring training, is expected to officially switch to agent Scott Boras, according to multiple major-league sources. Kim will start for Triple-A Colorado Springs this weekend, after which the Rockies plan to aggressively pursue dealing the right-hander.
Colorado would likely have to eat a chunk of Kim’s $2.5 million salary to facilitate a trade. Boras worked with the Rockies to help complete catcher Charles Johnson’s trade to Tampa Bay before the 2005 season that ultimately brought Kim to Colorado.
The Rockies’ bullpen remains a fluid situation, and the anticipated makeover could extend beyond the return of injured right-handers LaTroy Hawkins and Ramon Ramirez in the next 10 days.
Colorado remains actively interested in right-hander Dan Kolb, who is excelling for the Pirates’ Triple-A team. Kolb has an out in his contract this week and can become a free agent if not promoted. The Yankees’ Ron Villone, another pitcher the Rockies have had interest in, also can walk Tuesday if not added to New York’s roster.
