LOS ANGELES-
Owners of Staples Center sued an NBC affiliate they claim falsely reported the arena is a firetrap.
The suit accuses KNBC-TV of using misleading images and language in December reports about the potential for a fire at the arena, which is home to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The station “manufactured a crisis where none existed,” according to the suit filed Wednesday in Superior Court by the Anschutz Entertainment Group and a subsidiary, L.A. Arena Co.
Both companies are owned by Denver billionaire Philip Anschutz.
The suit seeks unspecified damages from the station, a producer, and KNBC-TV’s parent, NBC Universal Inc.
KNBC-TV said the suit was without merit.
