COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-

A Colorado Springs Sky Sox baseball team official was in serious condition Sunday after an explosion while he was preparing fireworks for a game.

Rai Henniger, 47, was behind the scoreboard around 3 p.m. Saturday, preparing a small fireworks display that goes off for home runs or wins, team officials and firefighters said.

Employees heard an explosion and found Henniger conscious but with injuries to his face, the team said. It was not immediately known what caused the explosion.

Henniger is senior vice president of marketing and promotions for the Triple-A Sky Sox. Team officials said he is a licensed fireworks exhibitor who has been handling fireworks for years.

Henniger was hospitalized in critical condition in Colorado Springs before he was moved to Denver Health, where he was listed in serious condition Sunday.
