The U.S. Open local qualifier concluded Tuesday at Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo after being delayed by Monday’s weather, with six men qualifying to move on to sectional qualifying in June.

Wil Collins of Rapid City, S.D., led the pack, finishing with a 64, four shots ahead of Jason Allen of Las Vegas. Dustin White of Pueblo West shot a 69 to claim one of the six spots. White qualified for the 2006 U.S. Open with a win at the sectional qualifier at Littleton’s Columbine Country Club, and was the 2006 Colorado Open winner.

Also qualifying with a 69 was Scott Petersen of Parker, and Bret Guetz of Scottsdale, Ariz., who grew up in Littleton. The final qualifying spot was won by Michael Zaremba of Pueblo West, who finished with a 70 and won a four-way playoff.

The U.S. sectional qualifying will be held in early June at 14 sites, with Columbine Country Club hosting one of the tournaments on June 4.

Culpepper, Torres return for Bolder Boulder

Two-time Olympian Alan Culpepper will lead the U.S. men’s elite team in the Bolder Boulder International Team Challenge on Memorial Day. Joining him are Edwardo Torres – like Culpepper a former University of Colorado runner – and James Carney, who recently moved to Boulder from Monterey Bay, Calif.

Former Adams State runner Zoila Gomez has been named to the U.S. contingent of marathon runners who will compete in the world track and field championships in Osaka, Japan, from Aug. 24 to Sept. 2. Gomez earned her spot by finishing fourth at the U.S. marathon championships in Minneapolis last fall with a personal-best time of 2 hours, 35 minutes, 26 seconds.

Apart from the marathon, the rest of the world championships team will be determined at the U.S. Outdoor Track & Field championships, June 21-24 in Indianapolis.
