ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo.-

Sweetwater County and Wyoming Highway Patrol officials say it’s time to crack down on people who get jobs in the state but don’t get Wyoming plates.

State law requires people to either get Wyoming license plates as soon as they start working in the state or get a 90-day temporary registration.

“There is potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars of motor vehicle revenue that is going uncollected at this time,” Sheriff Rich Haskell said. “We need to make sure it is being collected.”

Police are planning to report registration violations to the county treasurer’s office, which will use that information to create a database of noncompliant vehicles.

The database will be used to check license numbers of out-of-state vehicles parked at construction sites. Random traffic stops and road blocks also are planned.

Wyoming’s license plate laws exempt workers from Idaho, New Mexico, Nebraska and Illinois, which have special agreements with the state. There also is an exemption for people who commute daily from a bordering state.
