A man suspected of being the “Family Man Bandit,” a thief who tells his victims that he’s trying to feed his family, has been captured by Aurora police.

Denny Dewey Brown, 32, was arrested Monday night at the intersection of East Mexico Avenue and South Buckley Road, police said today. Investigators say they may have linked him to 12 robberies.

Brown is being held on $50,000 bail at the Aurora Detention Center in connection with an attempted robbery Monday at the Diamond Shamrock gas station in the 2100 block of South Peoria Street, authorities say.

In coming days, prosecutors expect to present evidence in several other robberies, according to Aurora police.

The robberies began Feb. 2.

The Family Man Bandit targeted gas-station convenience stores and sandwich shops.

Police said the robber would carry a handgun or simulate having one, demand cash from the clerk and run out of the store – sometimes leaving on a bike.

In one case, the robber stepped out of line and allowed a customer who was behind him to go ahead before approaching the clerk.

No one was injured during the robberies.
