In “Real Women Have Curves,” food does not play a large role, but its effects certainly do. One scene features America Ferrera and Lupe Ontiveros in a face-off about flan. Over dinner, the mother (Ontiveros) is telling her daughter to watch her weight. She says “Don’t you dare eat that,” as Ferrera stares her down and pops the fork in her mouth. American Flan
This is an easier, lighter version of Mexican flan. From Kristen Browning-Blas, serves 6.
Ingredients
2 cups milk
3 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
Nutmeg, fresh or ground
Directions
In a medium pan, bring milk just to a boil and remove from heat. In a large ovenproof bowl, combine eggs, sugar, salt and vanilla. Add milk and stir well. Sprinkle with a little nutmeg. Set bowl in a pan of hot water. Bake 1 hour at 325 degrees. Serve to your daughter without commenting on her weight.
