Epilepsy cited in death of radio host’s killer

Epilepsy complications likely caused the death of a federal prison inmate convicted in the 1984 machine-gun slaying of Denver radio talk show host Alan Berg, a coroner said Wednesday.

An autopsy found no signs of foul play in Monday’s death of David Lane, 68, and linked it to his epilepsy, a neurological condition affecting the nervous system, Vigo County coroner Roland Rohr said.

“It’s consistent with a silent seizure causing death,” he said.

Lane was serving a 150-year sentence for violating the civil rights of Berg, who was gunned down in front of his Denver residence in June 1984.

Lane and co-defendant Bruce Pierce were convicted in 1987 in the shooting of Berg, who was targeted by a Nazi-like group known as The Order for comments on his radio show about white supremacists.

Clothier appears before grand jury

Cherry Creek North clothier Andre Holliday appeared Wednesday before the Denver grand jury that is investigating the alleged theft of $10 million from the state Department of Revenue.

Authorities have said that Holliday, 42, is not suspected of any wrongdoing.

However, he is an acquaintance of the two people charged in the case, Hysear Don Randell, 40, and Michelle Cawthra, 30.

According to court files, Holliday said Randell recommended Cawthra, a supervisor at the Department of Revenue, to do Holliday’s taxes.

Cawthra, described as Randell’s girlfriend, is suspected of funneling the stolen money into fraudulent accounts controlled by Randell.

Holliday declined to comment.

His attorney, Lisa Wayne, said Holliday was subpoenaed to appear before the grand jury.

“He’s not here because he is in trouble,” Wayne said.

Medina said the cab was responding to a call for a fare in the Arvada Gardens condominium complex when he was shot about 2 a.m.

Veterinarian, clinic sued in horse’s death

The owner of a miniature horse that died last year just days after moving to Colorado is suing a veterinarian who treated the animal, and the vet’s former employer, claiming negligence.

In a complaint filed May 9 in El Paso County District Court, Patty Fairchild alleges that Jeffrey Weinberg treated the horse, Ragtime, with a variety of medicines, mineral oil and salts shortly before the horse died Jan. 3, 2006.

She said she learned from the Colorado Board of Veterinary Medicine that her 175-pound horse was given too much magnesium.

Weinberg could not be reached for comment.

Ex-firefighter leads neighbor to safety

A former Arvada volunteer firefighter led a neighbor to safety Tuesday after a fire broke out in a garage in the 7000 block of Welch Court.

Trevor Byrne, who lives behind the affected house, was home about 4 p.m. when he noticed smoke.

At first, Byrne thought someone had started a barbecue, but the smoke intensified and he walked over to investigate. Byrne said he saw the fire and rang the doorbell.

“I could see that the door was cracked open but no one was answering,” he said. “When I went in to yell for someone, she was standing right inside the door.”

Arvada fire officials said damage was limited to the garage. The fire marshal’s office is investigating.
