Getting your player ready...

This week’s tip is from Diane Betts of Monument.

I enjoyed your May 4 article about gloves, and although I have my fair share of styles, this is what I do before venturing into the garden.

I dig my fingernails into a bar of soap before even putting on gloves. (Use a soft enough soap that allows you to collect a mass of it under each nail.)

More often than not, I may start out with gloves on, but they usually come off when I need to unearth a weed or bury a tender root that has been pulled out by critters. The layer of soap under my nails acts as a natural dam: it prevents nails from getting jammed with unwanted debris and also helps to keep nails from getting stained.

Also, it makes clean-up particularly easy.
