The Chicago Machine of Major League Lacrosse scored four unanswered points to end the game and beat the visiting Denver Outlaws, 19-17 at Benedictine Stadium on Saturday.
Chicago’s Athan Iannucci scored a 2-pointer to tie the score 17-17 with 4:13 left, then added a goal 12 seconds later to put the Machine ahead. Iannucci led Chicago (1-1) with four goals and two assists, and Pat Heim added four goals.
Denver (1-1) was led by Jeff Sonke’s four goals, including a 2-pointer. Brendan Mundorf added three goals and an assist, Matt Hanna had three goals and an assist, and Josh Sims dished four assists for the Outlaws (1-1).
Chipola earns Juco World Series title
Ryan Chaffee’s complete-game pitching effort led Chipola (Fla.) College to a 7-3 victory over New Mexico J.C. in the championship game of the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction.
Chaffee struck out eight batters and allowed five hits in overpowering New Mexico (55-8-1). Chipola (41-18) got a home run from catcher Trey Manz, and center fielder Logan Pierce went 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
New Mexico got a solo homer from right fielder Pedro Gomez, and starter Matt Speake took the loss, going 5 2/3 innings, giving up 13 hits and four earned runs.
Girouard sets state record in shot put
Aurora’s Milton Girouard set a Colorado state masters record in the shot put, men’s 45-49 age group, recording a throw of 48 feet, 10 1/2 inches at the Colorado Flyers Invitational at All-City Stadium. He surpassed the previous best, set by Kris Lettow in January, of 47-0. Girouard said he will retire after the meet.
Kevin Williams of D’Evelyn High School won the boys 3,200 meters in 9 minutes, 10.97 seconds at the Great Southwest Classic in Albuquerque. In other events, Parker Smith of ThunderRidge won the boys pole vault (16 feet, 5 1/4 inches), Charles White of Cherry Creek won the boys 800 (1:52.64) and Bobby Nichols of Regis won the boys 1,500 (4:02.00).
