In a deft marketing move done to capture a larger share of the minor-minor-minor league baseball market, the Long Beach Armada of the independent Golden Baseball League has changed its name.
The team will now be known, simply, as the “Long Beach Armada of Los Angeles of California of the United States of North America including Barrow, Alaska.” Period.
The longest name in professional sports.
“In order to better reach the larger Armada Nation, we felt compelled to lengthen the name to incorporate all our fans stretching from the warm beaches of Los Angeles to the frigid beaches of the Arctic Circle,” GBL CEO Dave Kaval said in a release.
“Our inspiration was Arte Moreno’s brilliant marketing gambit of positioning the Anaheim Angels as an L.A. team. Being a real Los Angeles County team, we too wanted to extend our reach as far north as possible.”
On July 30, the Armada will host “Barrow Alaska Day at Blair Field” in Long Beach, in honor of its sister city, the northernmost city in the U.S. Barrow residents will get Armada baseball information on radio station KBRW.
None of this should come as a surprise, considering Armada promos this season include “Mother-In-Law Night,” “Bald Guy Night” and “Rock, Paper, Scissors Championship Night.”
But how will LBALACUSNAIBA fit on a team cap?
