GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo.—A lawyer representing Denver Nuggets’ reserve forward DerMarr Johnson says his arrest resulted from a misunderstanding.

Police said they arrested Johnson early Saturday for resisting arrest and interference with a police during a disturbance outside the Purple Onion nightclub. Police said they used a taser to calm Johnson.

“He apparently would not cooperate,” police Lt. Randy Corbitt said.

Dan Recht, Johnson’s lawyer, released a statement to The Denver Post: “DerMarr was breaking up a fight between two women. There was a great deal of confusion and the police mistakenly believe he was interfering with them. However, we are confident when all the facts come out it will be clear that DerMarr is innocent and did nothing wrong.”

Johnson and the two women were all arrested, booked and released. The women were charged with disturbing the police.
