Chase Cooper of Guymon, Okla., shot a final-round 66 Tuesday and finished with a two-round total of 134 to earn medalist honors in a U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship qualifier at Mira Vista Golf Course in Aurora.
Cooper will be joined by two other qualifiers who are teammates at the University of Colorado: Derek Tolan, who shot a second-round low 65 (7-under-par) to finish at 135; and Riley Andrews, who shot back-to-back 69s for 138. The Publinx championship will be played beginning July 9 at Cantigny Golf Club in Wheaton, Ill.
Broomfield’s Stefanie Ferguson shot a two-round total of 153 at a women’s Publinx qualifier in Lexington, Ky. She will be one of eight golfers playing today in a sudden death playoff for five remaining spots in the national tournament that also begins today.
Colorado women added to Alpine ski team
Lindsey Kildow of Vail, Caroline Lalive of Steamboat Springs and Sarah Schleper of Vail were three of the eight skiers named to the 2008 U.S. Alpine Women’s Ski Team. The team will compete in the World Cup in Beaver Creek and Aspen in December. Also, Jake Zamansky of Vail was named to the men’s B team and Julia Littman of Vail was tabbed for the women’s C team.
Cross country Buffs meet President Bush
Several members of the CU men’s cross country team, the 2006 NCAA national champions, met with President Bush on Monday with 27 other national title teams.
Bradley Harkrader, Pete Janson, Billy Nelson, Stephen Pifer and Brent Vaughn made the trip with CU athletic director Mike Bohn, associate AD Ceal Barry and assistant athletic trainer Christy Kozeliski. The Buffs harriers are the second CU team to visit the White House. The national champion CU ski team went in April 2006.
Former prep star Waner successful vs. France Abby Waner, a former standout at ThunderRidge High School, tied a team-high count with 15 points as the USA Basketball Women’s U21 World Championship team topped France 81-68 in an exhibition game.
