DENVER—Colorado Sen. Wayne Allard was in Iowa Monday to help campaign for Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.
Allard, who will retire next year, was scheduled to meet with the mayors of Clinton and DeWitt, attend a meeting of state lawmakers in Davenport and visit a Romney phone bank.
On Sunday, Allard met with Republican activists at a brewery-restaurant in Davenport defending Romney’s values to fellow conservatives.
But Allard, a veterinarian, also took time talking to the activists about their family pets.
“Sen. Allard is pretty low-key,” said Brock Earnhardt, 62, a utility company executive from Davenport. “For me he puts a different perspective on Mitt Romney, who is high energy. The fact that Sen. Allard is so comfortable with Mitt Romney lets me know that Mitt Romney must relax from time to time.”
Allard defended the values Romney has shown during his life and told the group “If they carry your values, that’s what it’s all about.”
Some of Romney’s critics charge that he’s shifted his views on positions such as abortion and gay rights. Many conservative Christians are concerned about Romney’s Mormon faith, which he addressed at a forum co-sponsored by a Christian group on Saturday.
