2800 W. Lincolnway, Cheyenne, WY, 800-445-6945,.

RATES: Start at $106 per night for single king room. Overnight parking is free.

STAY HERE IF YOU’RE: Looking for a comfortable, well-maintained hotel that has retained some of its old-timey charm.

IT’S CLOSE TO: The junction of I-80 and I-25, two miles from downtown Cheyenne, five minutes from Cheyenne Frontier Days Frontier Park and F.E. Warren Air Force Base.

THE ROOMS ARE: Pretty, bright and airy, with some moving-around space, flat-screen TVs and extra sinks outside the bathrooms and mini fridges inside them.

THEY PUT ALL OF THE MONEY INTO: An ongoing expansion to make the place more attractive as a convention facility. Sadly, they took away one of the cooler dining rooms, where you could sit in a red vinyl booth and get breakfast, but they added Carol’s Café, a cute coffe shop where you can buy a newspaper and a latte. They also did away with the formal dinner prix fixe deal, but the prime rib special is still worthy.

THE BOTTOM LINE: One of eight Little America hotels owned by Earl Holding, the Cheyenne property remains one of the dearest, with a huge swimming pool, a fun gift shop and a nine-hole golf course so surrounded by the elements that a moose cow and her babies wandered onto it recently. It’s a worthwhile stopover or destination for the weekend.
