Beverly Hills, Calif. – The Aspen home of Saudi Prince Bandar bin Sultan has been knocked from its perch as the most expensive property for sale in the United States.
An estate where William Randolph Hearst and Marion Davies once lived was put on the market for $165 million Monday.
The estate, owned by financier Leonard Ross for three decades, has 72,000 square feet of living space in six residences on about 6 1/2 acres. The property is known as the Beverly House Compound, and John and Jackie Kennedy spent part of their honeymoon there, Westside Estate Agency, Ross’ broker, said in a statement.
The property includes 29 bedrooms in four houses, an apartment and a cottage. The main house has nine bedrooms, including two master suites; a two-story library with hand-carved paneling; eight fireplaces; two movie-projection rooms; and a living room with a 22-foot arched ceiling. A 20,000- square-foot expansion was completed in 1992.
The Spanish Mediterranean mansion, designed by architect Gordon Kaufmann, was built for Milton Getz of Union Bank and Trust in 1927, according to Wanamaker’s “Beverly Hills, 1930-2005” (Arcadia Publishing). Actress Davies purchased the estate for her lover, publisher Hearst, in 1946, and the couple moved into the house the following year. Hearst died at the estate in 1951.
