Products made by Castleberry’s Food Co. that have been recalled because of the threat of botulism poisoning may still be on Colorado shelves.
The Augusta, Ga.-based company announced a recall July 18 of canned chili, hot-dog chili sauce, beef hash, dog food and other products.
Symptoms of botulism poisoning include double vision or blurred vision, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing and progressive muscle weakness. Botulism poisoning can cause paralysis of breathing muscles and can be fatal, according to Daniel Rifkin of the state health department’s Consumer Protection Division.
The affected products are sold under brand names including Kroger, Austex, Bryan, Castleberry’s, Food Club, Goldstar, Loews, Meijer and Morton House. Dog food brands include Natural Balance.
A complete listing of recalled products is available at www.fda.gov. More information also can be obtained by calling the state health department at 303-692- 3620.
In a nationwide check last week, FDA investigators found potentially contaminated products still being sold in 307 of the 3,788 stores they visited.
