Four-time defending champion Dave Wiens of Gunnison set a course record in the Leadville Trail 100 Saturday, and 2006 Tour de France winner Floyd Landis finished second.

Landis, whose Tour win is pending while an arbitration panel decides his fate after he tested positive for synthetic testosterone, stayed with Wiens for much of the race despite crashing on a downhill section an hour into the race that left his bike with a flat tire.

“I chased too hard after the flat,” said Landis, bandages on three fingertips and blood-soaked gauze from just above the knee to his ankle. “He probably was going to win anyway, even without the flat. He’s in great shape.”

Wiens won in 6 hours, 58 minutes, 47 seconds.

Outlaws blow lead, lose to Dragons

San Francisco scored six straight goals to end the third quarter and wipe out a five-goal Denver Outlaws lead as the host Dragons won 16-15 in Major League Lacrosse action. The loss deprived the playoff-bound Outlaws of catching the L.A. Riptide for the Western Division title.

Stephens takes lead in CGA Stroke Play

Ryan Stephens of Lakewood Country Club, who plays collegiately at Texas Wesleyan, shot a 3-under-par 69 in the third round to take the lead in the Colorado Golf Association Stroke Play Championship at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora. Stephens’ 13-under 203 total has him one shot ahead of fellow Lakewood C.C. player and second-round leader Darrin Hall, who plays for the University of San Diego.

UNC announces Hall of Fame class

The University of Northern Colorado will induct six people as the 14th induction class into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame in November. They are Ed Dyer, who posted a 32-8 record as a baseball pitcher from 1961-64; Karl Dodge, a two-time All-American discus thrower from 1988-93; Billy Holmes, the leading rusher for the back-to-back national champion football teams in 1996-97; Jim Lord, the announcer for football, volleyball, and men’s and women’s basketball for 31 years; Mandy Nilsen, an All-American in soccer in 1999 and 2001; and Stormie Wells, a volleyball standout who led the nation in assists in 1996.
