Meet Amon Gordon, the Broncos’ starting right defensive tackle. Or should I say right defensive tackle du jour.
The demise of Gerard Warren’s career in Denver is the latest bit of evidence that the coaches are making personnel evaluations every day. Or, as some might say, making it up as they go along.
The coaches, after all, could have shown Warren the door during the offseason, in the midst of their various mini-camps. Instead, they not only brought him to training camp, but they also listed him No. 1 on the depth chart as recently as last week.
No more. Warren is on the trading block, and Gordon, a practice squader last season, is in the lineup. Question is, how long will he be there? All indications are that he’s keeping the spot warm for rookie Marcus Thomas.
Then there’s the strong-side linebacker job. Most observers felt that Eddie Moore or Warrick Holdman would emerge as the starter. So what happens? Knee problems force Moore off the roster, and Holdman sustains a spinal-cord injury in camp.
Those developments prompted the coaches to install Louis Green, another former practice-squad member, as the starter. So what happens in Monday’s exhibition opener? Nate Webster leads the team with eight tackles, putting him in position to challenge for the starting job.
So will Webster wind up starting? The way things are changing with the Broncos’ defense, who knows?
