DENVER—State air pollution authorities have given Denver Water, the state’s largest water provider, permission to use prescribed burns to protect watersheds.
The burns could contribute to the region’s air pollution problems.
The Rocky Mountain News says Denver Water said the small burns are needed to avoid fires from crippling water collection systems.
The Hayman Fire, the biggest in recorded history, caused nearly $30 million damage to Cheesman Reservoir.
The Colorado Air Quality Control Commission gave Denver Water the okay Friday.
The commission also is requiring the utiliy, which serves one-point-two million customers, to thin trees and create fire breaks to help reduce the threat.
