The Colorado Mammoth selected right-handed forward Nathan Sanderson from Rutgers as its first selection Saturday in the National Lacrosse League draft at the Pepsi Center.
“The right-handed forward was a priority for us and Nathan will be a great addition,” Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said. “He’s a solid player with the ability to go through the middle.”
Sanderson was selected in the second round, the 26th overall pick. The Mammoth also picked St.
Catharines’ Dylan Llord in the third round at No. 30 and Matt Wilson at No. 40. Andrew Spack, from Loyola University, was taken 54th.
University of Denver standout Ryan Zordani was taken by Boston, an expansion franchise, at No. 57.
The New York Titans took Delaware’s Jordan Hall as the top pick.
Boulder’s Bennett takes third in triathlon
Boulder’s Laura Bennett finished third at the ITU BG Triathlon World Championship in Hamburg, Germany, with a time of 1 hour, 54 minutes, 37 seconds. It was her fourth podium finish in the past five years in the 1.5K swim, 40K bike and 10K run event.
Portugal’s Vanessa Fernandes won the event in 1:53:27, and Australian Emma Snowsill earned silver in 1:54:31.
Jasmine Oeinck of Littleton earned a second-place finish Friday, becoming the first U.S. woman to medal at the under-23 Triathlon World Championship.
Oeinck, 21, finished the 1.5K swim, 40K bike and 10K run in 2:02:15, just 51 seconds behind winner Lisa Norden of Sweden. Oeinck, who trailed Norden after the swim leg, passed the winner in the biking event. But Norden used an impressive run to win gold.
Prokop, Kintner: Kings of the Mountain
Michal Prokop of the Czech Republic and Seattle’s Jill Kintner took top honors in the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively, at the King of the Mountain 2007 Mountain Biking World Professional Championships at Beaver Creek Resort in Beaver Creek.
Prokop won the men’s season-long title, while Kintner finished second in the women’s season standings behind Anneke Beerten of the Netherlands.
