The longest football winning streak in the nation came to an end over the weekend.

North Carolina’s Charlotte Independence High School, which had 109 victories in a seven-year undefeated run, lost in overtime 41-34 to Cincinnati Elder.

During the run, the Patriots became the first team to win seven straight state championships in North Carolina.

Most of the wins weren’t close. Independence had beaten opponents during its streak by an average of nearly 35 points entering the 2007 season.

In Colorado, the longest win streak is held by Limon, which has a Colorado-leading 18 championships. Its state-record 50-game winning streak ended in the 2006 Class 1A semifinals.
