Looking for more pitching depth and unable to sign Brett Tomko, the Rockies today brought up veteran Mark Redman from Triple-A Colorado Springs. He was a surprise player in the team’s clubhouse.
Manager Clint Hurdle said Redman will not be activated until this weekend. He will fill a long relief role in the bullpen, a current need because of Taylor Buchholz’s uncertainty with a sore elbow.
Redman is a candidate to start Tuesday in Philadelphia.
The Rockies did tweak the rotation slightly with Elmer Dessens and Jeff Francis going Friday and Saturday, respectively. Josh Fogg’s start was moved to Sunday, giving his sore shoulder a few extra days rest.
Redman is a long-time veteran who has pitched well against the Rockies as a member of the Pirates and the Marlins. Redman pitched briefly this season for Atlanta and was most recently in the Triple-A Sky Sox rotation.
Pitchers Dan Serafini and Denny Bautista and infielder Oman Quintanilla were activated today.
