Barnes & Noble opts to stock O.J. book

Barnes & Noble has changed its mind about the new O.J. Simpson book. After saying it would not stock copies of “If I Did It” in its stores, citing lack of customer demand, the chain recently said it would, indeed, carry the book.

Since its initial decision Aug. 21 against stocking the book (but selling it online) Barnes & Noble spokeswoman Mary Ellen Keating said: “We’ve been monitoring the preorders and customer requests and have concluded that enough customers have expressed interest in buying the book to warrant stocking it in our stores.

“For days, his book has been in the top 100 on and, at one point, it even topped the best-seller list.”

“Tango” objections

“And Tango Makes Three,” an award-winning children’s book based on a true story about two male penguins who raised a baby penguin, topped the American Library Association’s annual list of works attracting the most complaints from parents, library patrons and others.

Overall, the number of “challenged” books in 2006 jumped to 546, more than 30 percent higher than the previous year’s total, 405, although still low compared with the mid-1990s, when challenges topped 750. |The Associated Press

FIRSTLINE

The Star Garden

By Nancy E. Turner, $24.99

I watched the Wells Fargo stagecoach tip up on two wheels then roll on its side while a cold wind whipped my hat against the side of my face. From where I sat on my horse, there was no sound as it fell, sliding toward the place we call Sandy Cliff, southeast of my house. In the strange slowness of its tumbling, I considered for a time that the wind had tipped it. The box quit rolling at the very last point from which it could hold; another inch and it surely would topple over.”
