ST. CHARLES, Mo.—Danny Pate rode to a solo victory in the fifth stage of the Tour of Missouri on Saturday and Discovery Channel’s George Hincapie kept his overall lead.
Pate, a former junior world time trial champion from Colorado Springs, Colo., who rides for Team Slipstream, finished the 126.8-mile race from Jefferson City to St. Charles in 4 hours, 50 minutes, 21 seconds.
Colombian John Fredy Parra was second and Jeff Louder of Salt Lake City was third, both 8 seconds back. Hincapie, an 11-time finisher of the Tour de France from Greenville, N.C., finished 25th in the main field, 2:26 behind Pate.
Hincapie maintained an advantage of 1:40 over William Frischkorn of Boulder, Colo. David Canada of Spain is third, trailing by 2:22.
“It was really aggressive for the final (eight miles),” Pate said. “Everyone worked together, so we knew we were going to make it. We didn’t even have to try that hard not to get caught.”
Pate and eight other riders broke from the main field after about 25 miles and steadily built a lead that grew to more than six minutes.
Barring mishap, Hincapie is likely to claim the title of the race’s inaugural edition on Sunday, when the field will complete seven, 10-mile circuits around Union Station in St. Louis.
