La Mariposa: There are still four more days of summer. Make the most of them with a visit to La Mariposa (The Butterfly), a new paleteria and ice cream shop on the corner of South Federal and Kentucky Avenue. All popsicles are made in-house; flavors range from the expected (strawberry, melon) to the surprising (chili, cookies and cream), and a whole range of fresh fruit juices are made every day. | 887 S. Federal Blvd. | Tucker Shaw
The Gourmet Institute: Serious foodies who haven’t yet registered for the fifth annual Gourmet Institute should get cracking; spots are filling fast. The three-day chef fest in New York, hosted by Gourmet editor-in-chief Ruth Reichl, includes panels and cooking demos from such heavy hitters as Jonathan Waxman, Laurent Tourondel and Marcus Samuelsson. Tickets for the three-day extravaganza, at $1,395 a pop, can be purchased online. | | Tucker Shaw
Whole Foods gets cooking: The store at Belmar has revamped its cooking school and brought in a charming chef, Danielle Edmonds, right, formerly of The Brown Palace, to teach us all a thing or two about cooking. And at these prices (ranging from free to $40), you could learn a thing or five. The Cooking Studio will focus on practical cooking skills for all ages, special diets and classes for families, athletes and singles. Upcoming classes: Family Night (Friday), Kids in the Kitchen (Saturday), College Cooking 101 (Sunday). | Belmar Cooking Studio, 444 S. Wadsworth Blvd., Lakewood, 303-935-5000 | | Kristen Browning-Blas
