Through two games, the Broncos lead the NFL in total offense, passing offense and passing defense.

Oh, and luck.

How are we to look at their first two games? Depends on your point of view. If you’re a pessimist, you’re probably saying they could be 0-2. If you’re an optimist, you’re saying they’re undefeated and in first place in the AFC West.

How about if we go with the objective viewpoint? The Broncos after a series of injuries during the preseason looked like a team that figured to be better as the season progressed. Sure enough, they’ve had some issues in the early going, but have shown signs that they’ll be a serious playoff contender.

For one thing, they’ve gained 911 yards in their first two games, tops in the league. You don’t stumble across that kind of number. It means they’ve consistently driven the ball downfield. Just like those 38 points they’ve scored means they’ve consistently struggled to cash in with touchdowns.

Make no doubt, Mike Shanahan isn’t happy with what he’s seen.

“I’d much rather be No. 1 in points than No. 1 in total offense,” Shanahan said.

By the same token, “When you move the football like we did, eventually the points are going to come.”

Through two games, that’s what the Broncos are hanging their hats on. They know they’re too talented offensively to keep settling for field goals.

Statistics can lie in the NFL, but the Broncos’ No. 1 ranking in offense is telling it straight. They have one of the best offenses in the league, and common sense tells you it eventually will lead to a whole lot of touchdowns.
