A University of Colorado researcher who devised a program that can reduce child abuse – and lessen the chances of kids becoming involved in juvenile crime has been awarded the 2008 Stockholm Prize in Criminology.
David Olds, a developmental psychologist and director of the Center for Family and Child Health, will collect the prize in Stockholm next June.
Olds has been widely recognized for the Nurse Family Partnership program, which sends trained nurses to visit new parents who are likely to abuse their children. The program has been effective in reducing child abuse, and follow-up studies show the children whose parents received the visits were less likely to become involved in crime when they grew older.
Olds shares the 2008 prize with a professor from Great Britain whose research led to the development of drinking glasses that cause fewer injuries when used in bar fights.
