COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A Fort Carson soldier died in Iraq of injuries suffered in from a non-combat related accident, the Defense Department said Thursday.

Sgt. Edmund Jeffers, 23, of Daleville, Ala. was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team and was on his second tour in Iraq. Fort Carson officials said they didn’t have details about his death and the Defense Department said it was under investigation.

In February, Jeffers wrote an essay about the complex emotions of being a soldier in the war in Iraq and it was widely distributed online. He wrote that he thought America had lost its will to “defend what is right and just in the world” and spoke about returning to a country divided over the war.

“Let’s stop all the political nonsense, let’s stop bickering, let’s stop all the bad news and let’s stand and fight! Isn’t that what America is about anyway?” Jeffers wrote in the essay.

On his MySpace page, Jeffers said he was married to Stephanie Jeffers whom he called “my best friend and the light of my life.”

Jeffers is the 221st soldier from Fort Carson to die in Iraq.
