San Diego – Rockies MVP candidate Matt Holliday was not in the starting lineup for a second straight day today because of a left oblique injury.

Holliday, however, took batting practice before today’s game without problems and hoped to talk himself into the lineup. “I’m going to try,” Holliday said. If he’s unsuccessful, Ryan Spilborghs will go in his place in left field against the Padres.

The Rockies have won seven consecutive games, moving to within 2 1/2 games of the National League wild-card-leading Padres.

Jeff Francis starts the series finale today on the mound in San Diego.

The Rockies have an off day tomorrow, making it more probable that Holliday can start on Tuesday in Los Angeles.
