Contrary to what the old Chiffon Margarine commercials might have told us, sometimes it really is nice to fool Mother Nature. Case in point: Climashield Green’s recycled continuous-filament technology, providing insulation in the great outdoors from a synthetic material that’s better for the environment than most. Recently adopted for use in eco-conscious Patagonia’s Micro Puff outwear line (MSRP: $165), Climashield Green is made with more than 40 percent recycled material to offer insulation that is lighter, warmer and tougher than down. Most important, the “continuous filament” label means the stretchable, interlocking polyester material doesn’t require any chemical treatment to keep it from pulling apart, clumping, shifting, separating or any of those other annoying things that lead to heat loss through formerly insulated patches in your jacket or sleeping bag that tend to come with continued use. The highly compressible material easily regains its shape and volume outside its stuff sack, breathes well and is more effective at repelling moisture than down. Combined with Patagonia’s fashionable style, naturally, Mother’s going to love it.
