EDWARDS, Colo.—A man who taught theology and coached girls sports at Vail Christian High School has been arrested on charges of having a sexual relationship with a female student at the school.

John “Jamie” Allen, 27, of Edwards faces a charge of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, the Eagle County Sheriff’s Department said. Authorities said he had “an inappropriate sexual relationship” with the girl. Her age was not immediately known.

He was arrested Friday at his father’s house in Hermosa Beach, Calif., and was being held at the Los Angeles County Jail. Bail was set at $15,000.

A woman who answered Allen’s phone on Tuesday declined comment. It wasn’t immediately known if he had an attorney.

Sheriff’s Lt. Mike McWilliam said deputies began investigating after the girl wrote an e-mail to Allen saying she wanted to end the alleged relationship, but she accidentally sent it to a man in Florida with a similar address. He reported it to authorities.

The student, her parents and school administrators were cooperating with authorities, the sheriff’s department said.

School administrators sent an e-mail to parents saying, “Our highest concern is the continued care and the well-being of the students at Vail Christian.” They said pastors, counselors and a licensed therapist would available to meet with students.

Allen sent a letter of resignation to the school Thursday, administrators said in the e-mail. He had coached girls soccer and volleyball.
