COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Susan Greene plans to resign as executive director of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic in April, five years after building it from the ashes of the bankrupt Colorado Springs Symphony.

Greene announced her resignation Friday.

The philharmonic was formed by musicians from the 75-year-old Colorado Springs Symphony, which dissolved in 2003. When Greene became executive director that year, she had said she would stay about two or three years.

“We owe her a debt of gratitude,” said Tim Stack, president of the philharmonic’s board of directors. “Without Susan, we wouldn’t be experiencing any orchestral music in this community.”

Greene said her future plans include traveling, consulting and helping her daughter plan her wedding.

Her successor will inherit a philharmonic with no debt and a two-year contract with musicians. Challenges will include raising nearly $1 million a year in donations and continuing to build the audience.

Stack said the board would assemble a search committee for Greene’s replacement. He expected Greene would be part of the process.
