ENGLEWOOD, Colo.—Jack Reinsma scored the game-winner in the 60th minute and made a key defensive play as Denver Christian defeated top-seeded Fountain Valley 2-1 to win the boys 3A state soccer championship Saturday night.
The Denver Christian Crusaders (15-2-2), who lost 1-0 to Faith Christian in the 3A championship last year, last won the title in 1997.
Sixth-seeded Denver Christian took a 1-0 lead when Brent Ham opened the scoring with a bullish 40-yard run and finish in the 15th minute.
The Danes (17-1-1), playing in their first soccer title game in school history just one year after failing to qualify for the postseason, tied it in the 25th minute on a goal from John McCaffery.
Crusaders defender Danny Zoetewey set up Reinsma’s winning goal. He got the ball nearly 45 yards outside the goal and sent in a looping cross to the far post, and Reinsma headed the ball into the goal.
Crusaders goalie Colin Lanser made five saves.
