Golden Delicious apples make a pie filling that is deliciously sweet. If you like your apple pie with more of a sweet-tart flavor, use Granny Smiths or a combination of other apple varieties. You’ll need pastry dough for a single-crust pie, or a premade pie crust. Hands-on preparation time, 30 minutes. Bakes 55 minutes. Serves 10. Ingredients

FILLING

1/3 cup sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 salt

4 large Golden Delicious apples (about 1 1/2 pounds), peeled, halved, cored, and cut into

1/4 -inch-thick slices

1 tablespoon grated lemon zest (about 2 lemons)

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

CRUMB TOPPING

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup whole-wheat pastry flour

2 tablespoons rolled (old-fashioned) oats

2 tablespoons canola oil

1 tablespoon sugar

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Thawed frozen fat-free whipped topping, for serving (optional)

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pastry dough to a 12-inch round; ease into a 9-inch pie plate, pressing it against the side of the pie plate. Leaving a 1-inch border, trim off any excess dough. Crimp the edge to form a decorative rim; set aside. Or use a pre-made pie crust.

To make the filling, combine the sugar, cinnamon and salt in a large bowl. Add the apples and lemon zest and juice; toss to mix well. Spoon into the pie shell.

Make the topping, using a fork, stir together the topping ingredients in a medium bowl until well blended. Squeeze the mixture together to form a loose ball, then break into small pieces and sprinkle evenly over the filling. Bake until the filling is bubbly and the topping is golden, about 55 minutes. Loosely cover the pie with a piece of foil during the last 15 minutes to prevent overbrowning,if necessary. Let cool on a rack until warm before serving. Serve with whipped topping (if using).
