A thrift store in Louisville that raises money to rehabilitate birds of prey was broken into and robbed of cash.
The smash-and-grab robbery happened late Tuesday night at the Birds of Prey Foundation thrift shop, 1140 Pine St., said John D’Angelo, a spokesman with the non-profit group.
The burglar, or burglars, made off with about $200 in cash from a register and the foundation had to pay $500 to have a glass door, which was smashed to gain entry, replaced.
The $700 the foundation is down could have been used to rehabilitate an injured or orphaned eagle, or owl, D’Angelo said.
“We are entirely dependent on private donations,” D’Angelo said. “It’s not some big operation.”
Louisville police are investigating the burglary.
The foundation takes in between 400 and 500 birds a year and releases more than 60 percent of them back into the wild, D’Angelo said.
For more information on the foundation or to make a contribution visit its website at www.birds-of-prey.org, or call 303-460-0674.
“Hopefully, this can be a unifying experience,” D’Angelo said. “It will bring us all closer together, and we have a lot of support from the community already.”
