The American Red Cross is putting up residents of a handful of apartment units at a Dillon complex, after they were displaced by fire earlier today.
The fire started at about 3:30 this afternoon at the Meadows apartments, on Straight Creek Drive. Lake Dillon Fire Rescue spokesman Brandon Williams said the blaze began on a third-floor balcony of one apartment and then spread. A woman who lives two doors down from that apartment reported the fire, after waking up from a nap to hear popping sounds and then see flames come leaping at her when she looked outside.
Lake Dillon fire trucks were already in the area from another call, and Williams said crews began attacking the blaze about three minutes after the call came in. They extinguished the blaze quickly, and investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire, Williams said.
In all, six units suffered fire or smoke damage. Williams said about 15 residents were displaced.
The Red Cross is providing those residents with places to stay, meals and other services until they can get back into their apartments or find new housing, Red Cross volunteer Kim Estes wrote in an e-mail.
