Officials with the Douglas County School District discovered more than 24 shattered windows this morning at Mountain Vista High School in Highlands Ranch.

Vandals threw several large rocks through the windows near the front of the school and caused about $15,000 in damage, said Whei Wong, district spokeswoman. Some of the rocks damaged office computers as well, she said.

“You know those garden river rocks, about half the size of a football and just small enough to fit in your hand?” Wong said. “The rocks were like those.”

An employee with District Security patrolling the school parking lot spotted three people at 1:45 a.m., before the damage was discovered, Wong said, but they left as the guard approached them.

Wong said she did not know whether the three were students but said they were captured on school security cameras.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and District Security are reviewing the tapes.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 303-660-7500 or the Safe to Tell hotline at 1-877-542-SAFE.

Mountain Vista High School has 1,982 students and has never been vandalized before, Wong said.
