Place a napkin in your lap and put the car on cruise control – it’s time to eat.
Eating on the go has become a reality for many Americans, in spite of the safety risks of distracted driving and the potential for a mess.
The latest entry into the on-the-go fast-food snack category comes from Denver-based Quiznos, which today is launching $2 flatbread sandwiches called “sammies ” – in Sonoma Turkey, Italiano, Alpine Chicken and Bistro Steak Melt varieties. The flatbread has a subtle doughnut flavor that’s slightly yeasty and sweet, said Quiznos executive chef Zach Calkins.
The flatbread sammies join a bevy of portable fast-food snack options, from McDonald’s snack wraps to Burger King’s chicken fries in a container that fits into cup holders and KFC’s snacker sandwich and triple dip strips.
The folded flatbread sammies come in sleeves for easier hand-held eating. “Not that we’re promoting that you drive and eat at the same time, but they’re really good for on-the-go,” Calkins said.
Ron Paul, president of Chicago restaurant consulting firm Technomic Inc., said many people don’t always have time to eat at traditional meal times.
“You are going to see more snack-type products developed at lower price points for in between the meals,” Paul said. “It’s a change in our lifestyles that is driving this.”
